Albright Middle school is the school for fifth through eighth grade students in School District DuPage 48 and the students with visual impairments from fifth through eighth grade are also programmed for at Albright. At this level there continues to be an emphasis on core curricular skills, however, there are additional skills that are critical for visually impaired students that are also emphasized. There are students with visual impairments who have been determined to need material modification and little else; there are also students with additional disabilities, who continue to need a more hands on approach. Curriculum for students with visual impairments totally parallels the mainstream curriculum with materials being available in the media the student uses (braille, large print, auditory, some combination). There are resource teachers available throughout the day for clarification on visual materials (often math or maps are difficult to totally present in a mainstream classroom without additional instruction for the totally blind student). For the student with additional challenges, there is a more applied curriculum.
All students are expected to complete certain areas that align with the National Agenda of the Expanded Core Curriculum for Persons with Visual Impairments. This includes specific mastery and demonstration of skills in the areas of daily living, technology, travel, and prevocational.
