Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Overview
Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Services are provided to students as described in the Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA). As related services, OT and PT provide specialized interventions to support students' independence and participation in their educational program. The role of occupational and physical therapy in the schools is fourfold: 1) To provide an accurate assessment of student needs in the learning environment; 2) To support teaching staff by providing information on how to interact safely, comfortably and effectively with students; 3) To help adapt programming and the school environment to meet individual student needs and 4) To provide therapeutic intervention as needed to allow the student to benefit from his/her individualized education program within the least restrictive environment. SASED OT and PT staff provide services to students in SASED programs and within member district schools.
Services
Occupational and Physical therapy practitioners may provide support to educational staff through the Response to Intervention or problem solving process to address student concerns on a consultative basis. Student observations across a variety of natural settings can provide insight into accommodations, therapeutic strategies or modified equipment/materials that may be beneficial for student success.
Students are determined to be eligible to receive Occupational Therapy and/or Physical Therapy services through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan process which includes a full and comprehensive evaluation to determine if the skilled intervention by an occupational and/or physical therapist is needed to support the student’s educational program.
